Just like any other cartoonists, often I do get asked how do I draw cartoons. And the answer is quite simple - just follow the basics as the most of the cartoonists have been following.
I follow the 3 STEP procedure
STEP 1) Sketching - This is where you roughly put up pencil sketch of what you intend to draw.
STEP 2) Inking - This is where you draw the outline of the cartoon once the pencil sketching is done. The outline is what permanently defines the format of the cartoon.
STEP 3) Colouring - Now, this step is optional , the cartoon can just stop at the Inking process, with your imagination you can add more life into cartoon with colouring.
Updating the tools used :
Over the period of Time my usage of tools and softwares have kept evolving , so I will start with recent tools usage to earlier ones.
Dec 2017 to till date :
Gadgets : iPad Pro (12.9 inch) and iPencil
Software(s) : AutoDesk Sketchbook , this software is available as App on your mobile and tablets.
So right I sketch my drawings directly on iPad Pro using iPencil and it does give me the feel of drawing on sheet of paper. And perform inking , colouring and also adding text on the Sketchbook application.
NOTE : Sketchbook was paid untill this year BUT now it's free !
Prior to Dec 2017
Gadgets used : Normal Pencil, Wacom , Laptop for connecting wacom
Software(s) : SmoothDraw and Inkscape
So I would sketch my drawings the normal way on the paper and pencil and then transfer the drawing into my system taking pic of the drawing.
And once I had the drawing into the system I would Ink and Colour using Wacom Pen Tablet. Generally I would use SmoothDraw application for inking and colouring. And I would use Inkscape for the composing ie., arranging the cartoon in order and adding text to the cartoon post the colouring.
NOTE : Inkscape and SmoothDraw are Free for world to use and draw :)
